Stump Removal in Olympia & Thurston County

That leftover stump trips people, feeds pests, and sends up suckers. We grind it below grade so you can plant, sod, or just get your yard back.

Overview

Why stump removal matters

A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. It's a trip hazard, a home for pests, and a stubborn source of suckers and regrowth.

Willard's grinds stumps well below grade and turns the stump and surface roots into mulch. Spread it or have it hauled, your call.

What's left is a clean, level spot, ready for lawn, a garden bed, or a new tree.

How it works

A clean, predictable process

  1. 01

    Check access and utilities

We confirm the grinder can reach the stump and account for anything underground before we start.

  2. 02

    Grind below grade

The stump and major surface roots come out past ground level, so nothing regrows or pokes through.

  3. 03

    Level and clean up

Grindings are backfilled or removed and the area is raked level, ready to plant or sod.

Common Questions

Stump Grinding Questions

Common questions about stump grinding in Olympia and Thurston County.

How deep do you grind a stump?

Below grade, typically several inches under the surface, plus the major surface roots. That's deep enough to stop regrowth and let you sod, plant, or landscape over the spot.

What happens to the grindings?

They turn into a pile of mulch. You can spread it in beds, use it as backfill for the hole, or have us haul it off. Whatever works for your yard.

Can I plant grass or a new tree where the stump was?

Yes, once we backfill and level the spot. If you're planting a new tree, mention it, and we'll grind deeper and clear more of the root mass so the new roots have room.

Can your equipment fit in a tight backyard?

Usually. We use compact grinders that fit through most gates and side yards. Tell us about the access at your estimate and we'll confirm before the day of.
